Let’s paint a picture:

As a Parent, your daughter comes close to you only when she needs something from you. You live in the same house, she does the necessary house chores, cooks your meals and respects you, but you lack that parent to daughter intimacy. How would you feel?

I just read “Romancing the King – Brian Lake” and I have come to realize that over time, this is what many people (myself included) are doing to God. Don’t get me wrong, I love God and my desire is to do His will, however many times when I pray, I find myself asking for the things I want and want not.

About a month ago, I spoke to Nkechi, founder of WONDIVA about praying and getting answers and she made me realize the purpose of praying in God’s will. But how do you pray in God’s will when you don’t even know His heart?

Romancing the King opens your eyes to the importance of a Relationship with Responsibility. Unfortunately, many times we want the goodies without attachment; we desire what God can do for us and not what we should do to make him happy. Just like our earthly parents, our Heavenly father (most importantly) seeks an all-encompassing relationship and a deep level of intimacy with us.

It is only when we do this that we become one with God and as such our requests would be handled with joy. According to Brian Lake, the measure of access we have to God is linked to the level of intimacy we have with Him.

And only when we strike a chord within His heart that we begin to see changes in every area of our lives, there is no other way to it. Are you seeking this intimacy just like I am?

Die to your own desires and plans:

Does this mean you should not desire great things?

No! as children of God, we are all entitled to the best things of life as He told us in John 10 verse 10 “ A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so that they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of-The Message Version” I love this version so much because it totally breaks the word down and I am able to grasp the real meaning swiftly…lol

What this means is that we put God’s will first because once we are one with Him; we would begin to desire within His intention for us. Most times intimacy with God requires a great deal of sacrifice from us as we need to let go of a lot of desires and activities (quite difficult right?). What are you willing to sacrifice or let go for a deep level of intimacy with our King?

Prepare and Act adequately:

It is not enough to talk of dying to our desires; we need to actively work on it. Some of us have activities and habits that we find it difficult to live without or are simply addicted to. In the end we may need to let go of these things if they do not serve our intimacy plan and purpose no matter how difficult it may be for us.

It is in the place of preparation that we earnestly seek who our King is, what pleases Him and what exactly He wants from us. The major reference point for this is the Bible, not just reading but a deep study of the Word, talking to the right people, reading other Christian literatures and others.

If done right all these are aimed towards transforming you and renewing your mind. Are you willing to be transformed?

Be Humble:

If humility can endear us to people around us, how much more our Father in heaven? According to Colossians 3 verse 12, “So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline.”(The Message again..lol)

Humility opens the doors into the heart of our Father; it draws Him closer to us and vice versa. Esther’s humility opened the door to intimacy with king Ahasuerus.

Being humble does not make us doormats; when we come to Christ as sinners, recognizing our lack of merit and our complete inability to save ourselves; we are opportune to experience His grace and abundance mercy.

We “die to self” so that we can live as new creations in Christ putting the desires of His heart first. Only then will we enter into a deep and intimate relationship with Him. It is in the place of humility and total abandonment that we touch the heart of the King.

As I said earlier, I just started reading the book, but I just had to share what I have learnt so far because it’s something that speaks to me (and many other people) directly. I love God and I want to please Him so I am ready to accept the RESPONSIBILITIES that come with the RELATIONSHIP. What about you?
